upsetting or offensive websites > upsetting websites > Are suicide chatrooms or groups breaking the law?

Although the 1961 Suicide Act makes it an offence to help another person to commit or attempt suicide, providing information about suicide may not necessarily be prohibited.

The Home Office says people making postings to suicide chatrooms are not breaking the law unless they know that a suicide is being planned, and there is a direct link between their posting and the subsequent death.

However, you can still report a dubious chatroom or group to the site’s operators. They can remove groups that break their “terms of use” policy and may chose to remove the group.
