Business traders are responsible if it is not delivered but if you bought from an individual then insurance is the best option.

If you buy goods from a business trader, it is the responsibility of the trader if the goods are lost or damaged before delivery. You don't have to buy extra postal insurance to protect your goods against loss or damage before delivery, but the seller is entitled to charge you for insurance if he wishes to.

If you bought from a private individual you should pay for insurance if possible, and they will have to make any claim on your behalf.

If you end up out of pocket your only course of action will normally be to use the Small Claims Court. More information about going to court can be found on the Citizens Advice Bureau website.

If the claim is against someone who is difficult to trace, or has no money, you may have to write the loss off to experience.
