French phishing
One way to tell phishing emails from real ones (although our advice is that there should never be any real emails asking you for account details) is when you don't have an account with the organisation in question. Well, I do have an eBay account, but not in France (or more likely - not in French Speaking Canada), so when I'm told "Cliquez ici pour activer votre compte" I have one more reason to throw it in the wastebin.
There's an interesting sting in the tail, because the report I made to spoof@eBay.com was returned as undeliverable - apparently only registered members can make those reports, and as is usually the case that French Phishing email was sent to an email address which the phishers had "guessed", and which isn't my eBay member email address.
Fraud in the USA
Last month the US Internet fraud reporting centre, known as IC3, issued their seventh annual report. Within the USA, the most dangerous place to live by far is Alaska with four times the rate of complainants per head as second-placed Colorado. Because of the lack of law enforcement on the Internet, some people claim the Internet is like the “Wild West”. They are wrong. The “Wild West” had sheriffs – something rather lacking online in the UK today.

But now retailers small and large are struggling to determine which orders are legitimate and which ones are not.
